As many as 150 islands, islets and rocks are situated on the island of Murter, and 89 islands are located within the National Park Kornati.
Part of the Kornati Islands, about two-thirds of land and waterways, is today a national park. From the Law on the introduction of the highest degree of protection Zut and Sit with their islands have been omitted, although geomorphologically, geographically and culturally belong to the Kornati island group. Since the designation of the National Parks Island in 1980, many scientific studies have been carried out on Kornati, especially those related to natural heritage. These studies have revealed numerous information on the geological, meteorological, geographical, biological and other characteristics of the islands. There are 537 plant species on the mainland, 226 species of benthic algae, about 850 species of living organisms in the sea, including 579 invertebrates, 160 species of fish, one turtle and three species of mammals, of which one – the sea bear – probably forever lost.
Despite such large numbers, everyone agrees that the Kornati islands are underestimated. This statement can only be supported by one statement. Scientists believe that the number of living organisms in the sea, when explored, ranged between 2500 and 3000. The anthropological heritage of the islands was also insufficiently explored and described.
There are hospitality facilities in the park that can provide basic visitor services, visitor behavior control and control, information and receptive points. Visitors are permitted to move around the entire park, except the area around the Purar Island and the cliffs of Male Purare and Volici, which is designated a special protection zone. Visitors to the National Park “Kornati” must always respect and respect the fact that all the Kornati islands, except as protected as a natural heritage, are privately owned.
In the area of the National Park “Kornati” there are eight decorated and marked mountain trails that lead to the gazebo from which it is possible to see the Kornati in their entirety or some of their most beautiful parts. These paths are marked and designed under the common name – Planinarski put Kornati.
