The memorial crosses on the island of Kornat
On August 30, 2007, 13 firefighters from Tisno, Šibenik and Vodice lost their lives on Kornati island during a routine firefighting operation. 12 firefighters suffered burns and lost their lives, while one firefighter, Frane Lučić, survived this fire with greater injuries. The death of twelve young firefighters is the biggest tragedy of Croatian firefighting. In the memorial of fallen firefighters, at the scene of their deaths, 12 crosses were erected in the drywall technique according to the project of Nikola Bašić, an architect from Murter. Along the crosses, there is a chapel dedicated to St. Florian, the fire protector. Each year, on the anniversary of the loss of firefighters, the family and friends visit this place and remember their loved ones who laid their lives on Kornati.
