Murterski Pir (traditional wedding)
Saying YES Murter style
Marriage is a serious matter and one of the most important events in anyone’s life. It is even more important in Murter because Murterski Pir has high cultural value. It is held at the beginning of August in Murter and it is a local cultural and tourist event during which locals (and guests) act out the old traditional wedding customs that are part of the rich cultural heritage of Murter. Men, women and children dressed in national folk costumes at the market place in the old village form a wedding procession, or pirovnjačka as the locals would say, led by the bride and groom and the bride’s friend. Carrying the bride’s “dota” (dowry), a variety of clothes distributed in “kohe“, and a chest on ropes tied to bars, the procession, accompanied with traditional songs and jokes, walks for an hour those few hundred meters from the market to the stage on the old waterfront, where the custom of giving away the young bride to the new family is acted out. The reason why this walk takes so long is not its length or the weight of the “dota”, but the old Murter custom that is still alive today, where on the route of the wedding procession the residents bring out tables in front of their houses and offer wine and delicacies, usually hroštule, traditional pastries, or pršunate, fritters, and the newly-weds and the rest of the procession stop to toast, drink, eat, talk and sing with the hosts. All participants of the wedding and the visitors dance on the central town square a traditional folk dance – kolo, with a special choreography and rhythm, and enjoy a variety of traditional delicacies.
