The most popular carnival in Dalmatia
“Bake” (Croatian for grandmothers) in Murter does not mean grandmothers – here they are called “babe” (grandmas), as in the rest of Dalmatia. Here bake means “masquerade”. Its residents have called it that since ancient times. Some say it is because during the carnival, women dressed as men and men as women, so they would call each other “didovi” (grandfathers) and “bake” (grandmothers), while others say that ghost and wraiths have always been called “bake” on the island. Carnival events in Murter, which bring together a large number of participants of all ages, have been held for nearly 130 years, and have over time become a traditional form of entertainment, relaxation, reaction to social problems and life situations. On Carnival Tuesday, a procession moves from Old Murter towards Hramina, where after the introduction of masked groups and masks, there is a trial of Krnje – the culprit of all the evil and wrongdoings that occurred in the previous year. What follows is the indictment, burning of Krnje and a carnival dance where the best masks are announced and receive awards. The crafting of masks starts up to two months before Carnival Tuesday and the masks are kept secret even between household members! Murter Carnival has in recent years risen to the level of the famous Rijeka Carnival. Considering the village has only 2200 inhabitants, comparisons even with Venice or Rio are not excessive. “Murterske Bake must be experienced because it is the best entertainment in the world”– said the proud Carnival Committee and everyone in Murter.
