Fest of Our lady of Karavaj
Our Lady of Karavaj celebrated in Tisno on May 26 every year starting from the end of the 18th century when the Gelphi family brought from Caravaggio, Italy a sacred image that depicts the Virgin and the visionary John. The shrine visits thousands of pilgrims and other curious people. The Holy Image of the Virgin is placed in a church in the middle of a hill to which leads two hundred stairs. Pilgrims from all over Croatia and the world climb up the stairs to pray.
The reason for the worship of Our Lady of Karava originated from the 15th century with the appearance of Our Lady of the Goddess in Caravaggio near Bergamo. The Gelpi family brought with them a picture of the apparitions of Ivanica, painted in wood of 1,70 m x 1,37 m, and placed in a chapel built on the hill Brošćica above the town of Tisno. As the worship and pilgrimage of Our Lady grew with years, so the Chapel was expanded several times and upgraded. Up to today’s church leads the so-called Karavajska road with 214 steps which pilgrims know to pass on their knees for the fulfillment of the vow. Every year, on the 26th of May, the Church of Our Lady of Karavaj visits tens of thousands of believers.
